There’s definitely a feeling, when watching Beyond, that you embraced the kind of ‘nothing to lose’-ish spirit it takes to just say “we might as well really go for it!” How long did it take to fully complete Beyond? Hydraulx were also juggling other projects like Death Note, Midnight Special and X-Men: Apocalypse in the meantime, right? Were there periods when you had to tinker with it on the side? For Beyond I just wanted run wild for the first draft and then refine, reassess, and figure how the hell we could actually make it.

We had a building with a finite amount of usable locations and that sort of drove the entire story for Skyline. There’s some many different lessons from Skyline that went into Beyond but first and foremost was that I didn’t want to box my imagination in the way we had in the first one. So I tried to be the Skyline ambassador in a way, I made myself available to whatever fans we had and went on podcasts and just sort of owned it.

Less than a year later we’d managed to make a movie that got a worldwide release, a massive comic con campaign, and did a lot of business across the world. We shot a teaser at Greg’s condo on Thanksgiving Day, 2009. So after I kind of sobered up from that initial drubbing, I realised I couldn’t let that negativity take away from what a crazy accomplishment it was. And never got the chance to see my movie at the Mann Chinese and maybe never will! So by the time I got there I couldn’t bring myself to go in and went across the street to a bar instead. On the drive there I was refreshing Twitter and just seeing tweet after tweet saying it was the worst movie ever made. One of the shittier days was on the opening weekend with my father in town, my wife and I drove him to the Mann’s Chinese to see it with a bunch of friends. I let that get to me in the early goings. When you run into a critical buzz saw like we did on the first Skyline, it can really leave a bad taste in your mouth. How do you feel about Skyline now, looking back on it? What did you learn from the experience that helped you when developing the second movie? I confess, I would watch the hell out of War Of The Ages. Everyone saw the potential of this low budget setup with huge visuals and it just took off right away. But from the very first time we pitched the logline, we all knew it was kind of special. Colin and I were both obsessed with Lost at the time, so you can see some of that influence in the flash forward opening and the mystery of the blue lights.

We took our favourite bits from each and got to work. Waking up one morning, seeing something strange outside your window and then everything just unravelling before your eyes.Īfter we came up with the general concept, the co-writer Joshua Cordes and I wrote separate three-page treatments. It seemed like an ideal place to watch the world end, so that really was the genesis of the story. You should too.So, lesson learned there, we started thinking along the lines of Paranormal Activity – shooting something in Greg’s new penthouse condo which overlooked Los Angeles. And after Beyond Skyline and Skylines, I’ll follow this VOD franchise till the end of the line. The film ends on a “Here’s what might happen next time” story beat, but only as a tease after a self-contained story. The shocking thing about Skylines is that A) it follows the inexplicably good Beyond Skyline and B) it actually delivers on a very specific promise in a way that its much bigger-budget brethren did not. Think the Scorpion King movies, the Wrong Turn sequels and the 3,814 Land Before Time movies. There are any number of direct-to-DVD or direct-to-VOD franchises that spun off from theatrical releases. The most incredible thing about Skylines (on VOD and in participating theaters) isn’t that it exists. While Skylines opens with detailed exposition from Beyond Skyline, it certainly helps to have seen the superior second flick. VOD budget aside, it’s a kick to see a movie actually have to cash its “fight the aliens on their turf” check. It’s a little less actioner/martial-arts-centric in exchange for a slighter larger scope, and it’s every bit as “Why the hell not?” weird as its predecessor. This isn’t “ Braveheart or Black Hawk Down in space” but rather a small-scale mission into enemy territory to defeat the invaders from within. For the record, Skylines, set 15 years after the events of Skyline and Beyond Skyline, is limited by its budget. While the teases at the end of mega-budget bombs turned out to be mere bluffs, Skylines actually delivered. Independence Day: Resurgence and Pacific Rim: Uprising both made the key mistake of holding off the cool new idea for the threequel and instead offering up a sequel that was merely a warmed-over rehash of the first film.
